Meet the new breed

Formed in: The band got together in 2006. Started playing the professional circuit around eight months ago.

Members: Krsna (vocals), Subhodeep (guitars), Harsh (guitars), Bijit (bass) and Tuhin (drums).

Genre: Retro/alternative rock.

Age average: 20 years.

Influences: Rolling Stones, The Who, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Greenday. Also mentions Creed and Dream Theater.

USP: Original compositions and a bluesy, old-school sound.


Gravy Theory

Formed in: End-2007

Members: Prince (guitars), Raul (vocals), Thakur (guitars), Kuppa (bass) and Rico (drums).

Genre: Modern alternative rock/post grunge. “It’s not a sound you’ve heard in the local scene,” the band stresses, “We are very true to ourselves and our situation when we write.”

Age average: 19-20 years.

Influences: Everything from punk rock to 80s hair metal to progressive to a bit of funk and electronica. That means bands like Paramore, Coheed & Cambria, Escape The Fate, Bullet For My Valentine, Alien Ant Farm, Freak Kitchen, Imogen Heap and Third Eye Blind.

USP: Knack for funky originals. Thoroughly enjoys itself on stage.


CRYSTAL & THE WITCHES

Formed in: 2006.

Members: Arthur (keyboards), Diwash (guitars and vocals), Leyong (bass) and Subhro (drums).

Genre: Thrash/melodic death metal.

Age average: 22 years.

Influences: Primarily Megadeth. Also Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Kreator, Lamb of God, Bullet for my Valentine, Sepultura, Shadows Fall.

USP: One of the few bands here who can match its metal swagger with on-stage performance. Searing guitar solos.


pseudonym

Formed in: September 2006.

Members: Damayanti (vocals), Sompratim (vocals, guitars), Devapriya (vocals, guitars) and Rajan (drums). Newest addition is bassist Roheet.

Genre: Alternative rock.

Age average: 25 years.

Influences: Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Matthews Band, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Alanis Morissette.

USP: Live shows, twin guitar attack, originals that stress on instrumental tunes and song subjects — like its track Little Calvin, which is a twist on the Calvin & Hobbes strip.


Camouflage

Formed in: 2005.

Members: Rajarshi (guitars and backing vocals), Jit (drums), Suvo (vocals) and Arnab (bass).

Genre: Modern alternative rock.

Age average: 25 years.

Influences: Coldplay, Maroon 5, U2, Snow Patrol, Muse.

USP: A Britrock-influenced, enveloping guitar-bloom — what the band calls its “definitive contemporary delayed echo soundscape” — that often works wonders.
