Imphal, Nov. 25: Oil India Ltd, Duliajan, blanked out Amity United, Haryana, by 3-0 goals via tiebreakers to book a berth in the final round of the 30th Federation Cup Football Tournament.
The final match of the Group D preliminary knockout round played today at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium here ended in a goalless draw till the end of extra time.
Earlier in the game, both teams had ample opportunities to score, especially Amity United, but they were luckless as several of their shots got deflected from the crosspiece.
The first half belonged to Amity United as they dominated the ball and launched a series of attacks but could never get any goals. Despite that, OIL custodian Prandeep Dutta had a hectic time.
Amity United player Tushar Chaudhary missed an absolute sitter with the goalkeeper at his mercy but took too long to execute his shot, giving Oil India defenders an opportunity to put the ball out of danger. OIL striker Okwuelum Ezekier also missed a golden chance. After a goalless 90 minutes of play, the game had to be decided in extra time of 15 minutes each.
Amity United striker Monday Ugboji received a yellow card from referee M. Bhattacharjee in the second half of extra time.
Oil India Ltd should have ran away with the victory in the extra time from a penalty kick but Manuj Gogoi completely mistimed it and shot overhead. The penalty kick was awarded after Amity United goalkeeper Pradeep brought down Ezekier inside the penalty box.
Amity keeper Pradeep was shown a yellow card for the foul and Manuj Gogoi was booked with a yellow card for a foul against Amity player Danny L. during extra time.
The goalless result in the extra time, too, finally led to a penalty shootout. In the resultant kicks, the nightmare continued for Manuj Gogoi of OIL as he shot overhead again. Amity United player Sandeep Chakraborty, too, missed the target, hitting the crosspiece.
But the OIL men in their next shots rejoiced as Zaidin Mawai Hmar, Durga Boro and Okwuelum Ezekier converted their kicks while Amity United player Vivek Singh Karia missed the target and Sandeep Malik’s shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Prandeep Dutta. No further kicks were taken as OIL won 3-0.
Assam Football Association congratulated OIL on the victory, adds a staff reporter from Guwahati.
In his message, AFA secretary Ankur Dutta described the win as a milestone and hoped the team would do well in the main round.
