Bandh for compensation

Imphal, Nov. 24: A joint action committee formed by residents of Minuthong and victims of the Ragailong bomb blast have called a daylong bandh tomorrow in protest against the Okram Ibobi Singh government’s failure to compensate the victims.

The secretary of the action committee, Ningthoujam Bhumeswor, today said the deadline set by the committee for the Ibobi Singh government to pay ex gratia and provide financial assistance ended today.

A powerful IED planted by cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (Military Council) killed 18 people and wounded 40 others near the gate of Ragailong village on the outskirts of Imphal city on October 21.

“When we met Ibobi Singh on October 29, the chief minister promised us that ex gratia will be paid to the next of kin and also give financial assistance to the injured persons by November 3. But the families of the victims and the injured persons are yet to get the promised amounts,” the secretary said.

Ibobi Singh announced Rs 1 lakh each as ex gratia and financial assistance to the injured.

The Centre also announced Rs 1 lakh each for the victims and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.

They have not received the amounts yet.

The committee last week set today as the deadline for the payment of financial assistance and there has been no response.

“In other states, the governments paid ex gratia and financial assistance promptly. Why is the Ibobi Singh government delaying it? This is strongly condemnable,” he said.

The committee said the bandh would come into effect from 6am tomorrow.

The committee is also demanding a judicial inquiry into the incident.

The site of the blast is close to a police barrack where commandos are housed and also a transit camp of the Assam Rifles.

In an unrelated development, the employees of the state irrigation and flood control department today held a sit-in at the gate of their head office at Khoyathong in Imphal city, demanding the arrest of the persons responsible for killing of two drivers of the department.

Unknown persons gunned down Yumlembam Inaobi alias Sahadev and Maibam Chaoba Singh, both drivers of the irrigation and flood control department. Their bodies were found inside a Maruti car on November 22 at Lamlai in Imphal East.

The two were on their way in the Maruti car belonging to an engineer of the department to Maphou, where the department is taking up a multi-purpose project.

The chief engineer of the department, A.H. Khan, demanded that the culprits be arrested.

The police are not able to name the culprits and no group claimed responsibility for the killings.

The Ibobi Singh government promised the families of the drivers that one government job would be given to a family member each.
