GPS trackers to curb crime

Jamshedpur, Nov. 24: Criminals, who have been taking advantage of the late arrival of police at the place of crime so far, beware!

Modern technology has become their enemy now, as the police control room would go the tech way.

East Singhbhum district administration will soon introduce a satellite link to keep a check on crime and to catch the criminals.

The mechanism, Tetra System, has already been installed at a separate site in police control room in Sakchi.

East Singhbhum superintendent of police Naveen Kumar Singh said the police control room is being equipped with global infor- mation system and global positioning system to make the system functional.

Once operational, the system will help the police to locate the scene of crime and inform their officers about it so that they can reach the place without wasting a second.

Officers said that a lot of time is wasted in transferring information.

“In accordance with the system, cellphones of the police officers will be linked with the system at the control room. If the police officer at the control room finds out about a criminal case, they can locate the position of an officer on the monitors and inform the officer in charge to despatch teams immediately,” the superintendent of police said.

The new system is time saving, claims the superintendent of police.“In the present scenario, the officers posted at the police control room have to find out the location of a police officer under whose jurisdiction the crime has taken place. After detecting his location, the control room sends the force from the nearest place possible to the place of occurrence. But once the global information system is installed, the location of a police officer of any specific area will automatically reflect on the screen,” he said.

Accordingly, the officer at screen of the police control room will be in a position to know how much time it would take for force to reach the spot, Singh said.

He added that availability of police force at police control room or the police line would also be determined easily with the help of global positioning system for mobilising force from one place to another.

The police officers will also be under scanner when the new system is introduced, said Singh.

“Generally, some police officers tend to give wrong information about their whereabouts. In most cases, these officers claim to be on field duty when they are lazing out at their home or at police station. But once the global information system is introduced, such practices would come to an end,” the officer said.

The superintendent of police said the system is expected to start operating from next month. He added that special training has been given to some police officers to learn the way of handling the system in an effective manner.
