Antique idol
Four men were arrested in Habra, in North 24-Parganas, on Monday for allegedly trying to sell an
ashtadhatu
antique idol that went missing from Jessore in Bangladesh a few months back. Police said Tarun Ghosh, Debaprasad Sarkar, Subhas Biswas and Ananta Mitra were planning to sell the idol for Rs 5 lakh.The idol has been recovered.
Man injured
Uttam Naskar, 20, was injured in the foot while trying to avoid a shot fired by a promoter’s goons sent to take possession of a plot in Swinhoe Lane in Kasba on Monday. Naskar and some local residents were chasing them when the incident happened. He was treated at a local hospital. A revolver and two cartridges were found on the spot. No one was arrested.
Protest
More than 250 examinees of Calcutta University’s BA, B.Sc Part-I and II exams (under the 1+1+1 pattern), who had failed in one of the pass papers, held a sit-in at the university on Monday. They were demanding supplementary examinations.
Five arrested
Five men were arrested on Monday in connection with a bank fraud of Rs 5 lakh. Police said Ravi Tebriwal, Rajesh Dubey, Sheikh Farooq and Deepak Singh used to collect high-value cheques from Biplab Das, a courier agent, and encash them after opening fake accounts.
Bus accident
Eight passengers of a bus were injured after a truck rammed against it at 5.30am near Lake Town on Monday. The passengers were taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for first-aid. The truck driver fled with the vehicle. The bus was impounded.
Power failure
The Keoratala crematorium and its neighbourhood experienced a two-hour power failure on Monday afternoon. A heavy-duty generator was pressed into service to restore partial supply to the crematorium. Normal supply resumed at 6.25pm.
Suicide
Debashish Karmakar, 22, a student of NRS Medical College and Hospital, hanged himself from a ceiling fan in his hostel room on Sunday night. Karmakar was rescued and admitted to the hospital, where he died. Cops said Karmakar had been suffering from depression.
