Tailenders give visitors a hard-earned victory

Agartala, Nov. 23: Assam survived early jitters to carve out a laboured win against hosts Tripura in the C.K. Nayudu Trophy (under-22) match that concluded in the Polytechnic Ground, 12km northeast of here today.

Assam earned full five points from the match.

Set a target of 224 runs for an outright victory, Assam began well with a solid 77-run opening partnership between Pritam Debnath (34) and Abhijit Singha Roy (48). Then disaster struck as six wickets tumbled with the scoreboard reading only 138 and skipper Gokul Sharma’s dismissal with only 15 runs made the matter worse.

But the lower order batsmen kept their cool and gritty knocks of 52 by Rajib Kalita and 32 runs by Prasanta Sonowal helped the visitors coast to the victory target at the expense of eight wickets.

For Tripura, medium pacer Rana Dutta and Rakesh Sharma shared the bowling honours picking up three wickets each while Sanjit Saha chipped in with two wickets. Prakash Bhagat of Assam was run out.

Earlier today, Tripura could add only 25 runs to their overnight total of 192 for six and folded their second innings at 217. With the first innings of lead of only six runs, Tripura set the visitors a target of 224 for an outright victory.
