Assam boys humble Tripura

Hailakandi, Nov. 23: Some bowling heroics from Assam player Kankan Das saw the team defeat visitors Tripura by a mammoth margin of 127 runs in their three-day Vijay Merchant Trophy (under-16) east zone cricket tournament match at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Stadium here on Saturday.

The Assam line-up set a target of 190 runs for Tripura to chase in the second innings.

The visitors were, however, bundled out for a paltry total of 63 runs in their second innings. Earlier in the day, Assam resumed their second innings on 52 for three and lost wickets at regular intervals. Their innings finally folded up at 142 runs off 70.3 overs.

Chasing the second innings target of 190, the Tripura batting line-up cut a sorry figure and folded up in 32.5 overs, with only three batsmen — Tapash Rudrapaul (12), Surajit Khadim (10) and Kishan Shome (15) — managing to score in double figures.

Four Tripura batsmen — Saurav Roy, Joydeep Banik, Saurav Das and Moti Tripura — returned to the pavilion without opening an account.

Assam’s Kankan Das was the chief demolition man having hauled five wickets for seven runs. Sanjow Brahma claimed two wickets for 12 runs to ably support his colleague. In their first innings, Assam had posted 195 and Tripura were bundled out for 147. Assam’s Manashjyoti Gogoi was the topscorer of the innings making 41 runs off 166 balls hitting two boundaries. Skipper Manoj Malo scored 31 off 52 balls, hitting four boundaries.

Tripura’s Surajit Khadim notched up three wickets for 40 runs. Bunty Roy, Saurav Roy and Nabajyoti Debnath picked up two wickets apiece conceding 20 runs each.
