Degree drive

London, Nov. 22: An 88-year-old German man has finally been awarded his university doctorate — 65 years after the Nazis blocked him from receiving it because of his Jewish ancestry, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Dimitri Stein was denied his degree in electrical engineering from the Technische Universität Berlin in 1943 and forced to go into hiding after a pro-Nazi academic discovered he was of Jewish descent. Stein said he had accepted his doctorate “with a tear in one eye and a smile in the other”.

Granny thief

Cincinnati (AP): Police in Ohio have arrested a 68-year-old woman on a bank robbery charge — and they want to know if she’s the so-called “Granny Robber” they have been seeking since last May. Police in the southwest Ohio town of Franklin say a woman handed a note to a teller in a Huntington Bank branch on Friday and made off with an undisclosed amount of money. Officers said Barbara Joly of Middletown was arrested a short time later.

Cat toes

London: Coco the cat is not your average stray — she is blessed with 26 toes, eight more than the usual cat, reports The Daily Telegraph. The jet black cat has seven toes on each of her front feet and six on each of her back ones. Cats normally have just 18 toes, five on their front paws, and four at the back. Coco was handed over to the local Cats Protection after being found wondering the streets of Dursley, in Gloucestershire.
