Opposition miffed with short stint

Agartala, Nov. 20: The winter session of the Tripura Assembly will begin tomorrow amid protests over its short duration and reduction in the number of annual working days.

The session will begin tomorrow and after a two-day weekend break, the House will reassemble on Monday and Tuesday.

The three-day session has come under criticism from the Opposition Congress and the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT).

“Our representatives walked out of the business advisory committee meeting on Tuesday and we will take our protest to the House also,” the leader the Opposition, Ratanlal Nath, said in an informal interface with the media this morning.

Nath accused the state government of systematically striking at the root of democracy by reducing the number of working days of the Assembly. Buttressing his point with data, Nath said that in 2000 the Assembly had 21 working days but after that, the number of working days had been drastically reduced.

“In 2001, the House met for only 19 days. There was an increase by two days in 2002 but this year, the Assembly has met for only 15 days,” Nath alleged.
