Raipur, Nov. 19: The fate of 687 candidates would be sealed tomorrow, as remaining 51 seats in Chhattisgarh is going to the polls in the second phase of Assembly elections.
The first phase of polling for the 39 Assembly constituencies was held on November 14. The counting of votes will take place on December 8.
In all, 8,814,228 electorate will exercise their franchise to elect their legislator from 687 candidates — of them 50 are women and 235 are Independent candidates. Out of 51 seats, Congress had pitted its candidates in 48 Assembly constituencies as it had given three seats to Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) with whom it had formed alliance.
Only a small pocket of the region in Sarguja district — bordering Jharkhand — that goes to the polls tomorrow is affected with the Maoist activities while remaining parts are comparatively peaceful. Sources said 17 battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had been deployed in the sensitive pockets.
Of the 12,073 polling stations across the districts of Raipur, Bilaspur, Korba, Raigarh, Sarguja, Koriya, Jashpur and Janjgir and Champa, 2,608 have been identified as sensitive while 355 booths as hypersensitive.
Among the 51 constituencies, Kasdol in Raipur district is the largest in terms of area and electoral roll while Manendragarh is the smallest.
Besides former chief minister Ajit Jogi and his wife Renu Jogi, deputy Speaker Badridhar Diwan, BJP state president Vishnudeo Sai, home minister Ramvichar Netam, health minister Amar Agrawal, Dilip Singh Judeos son Yudhvir Singh Judeo, former home minister Nand Kumar Patel and NCP chief Nobel Verma are in the fray.
