Homemaker mowed down

A 35-year-old woman preparing for her wedding anniversary celebration was crushed under the wheels of a speeding minibus near the 8B bus stand in Jadavpur on Tuesday afternoon.

Annu Sinha, who was run over moments after she got off her car, suffered a deep wound near her left temple. She was taken to KPC Medical College and Hospital, in Jadavpur, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Neighbours said the homemaker, who lived with her family on Jadavpur’s Deshbandhu Road, had gone to the bank to withdraw money for the anniversary reception.

Annu’s husband Sajni Kant Sinha, a general manager of a pharmaceutical company, was in Bangalore when the mishap occurred. Family members said he left for home immediately after hearing about the tragedy. The couple’s only child, Aman Shekhar, studies in Class VIII.

“The couple’s wedding anniversary is on Thursday. She had probably gone to the bank to withdraw money for the celebration,” said Keka Das, who lives on a ground-floor apartment of the same building as Annu’s family. “A few days ago, she had come to our flat to invite us to the party.”

Jiban Sarkar, a tea stall owner who witnessed the accident, said the minibus on the Airport-Jadavpur route was being driven recklessly.

“She got down from a white Maruti Zen and was trying to cross Raja SC Mullik Road when the driver of the minibus lost control and mowed her down,” Sarkar recalled.

Annu’s driver Uttam Basu said he was waiting for her to come back from the bank when a family member called and asked him to return home immediately.

“Madam had got down from the car around 12.30pm, asking me to park the vehicle near the Canara Bank branch. I did not know about the accident till I got the call,” he said.

In another mishap, 41-year-old Amrit Avasthi died after being knocked down by a speeding autorickshaw on Diamond Harbour Road, in Behala, on Tuesday morning.

The resident of Behala’s Manton, who supplied polythene products and plastic utensils to shops, was returning home when the mishap occurred.

“He had almost crossed the road when the auto, speeding towards Taratola, swerved suddenly to the left and hit him from behind,” said Suraj Shaw, a taxi driver who witnessed the mishap.

Avasthi fell on the road and suffered face and chest injuries. He was taken to Vidyasagar Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The couple’s only child, Sourav, studies in Class IV.

“The driver of the killer minibus has been arrested and the vehicle impounded. The auto driver fled after the mishap,” said Sunil Kumar Chaudhuri, the additional superintendent of police (industrial), South 24 Parganas.
