Maharathi cast cuts fees

Paresh Rawal’s popular Gujarati play Maharathi has been adapted on celluloid. And the film, also titled Maharathi, truly has maharathis in the cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Paresh Rawal and Boman Irani. Neha Dhupia and Tara Sharma add the glam quotient to the movie.

Produced by Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision, Maharathi is directed by Shivam Nair (of Soha Ali Khan-Abhay Deol-starrer Ahista Ahista fame). And news is that all the actors loved the script so much that they cut their fees drastically to be a part of the mystery-thriller which releases on December 5.

Shree Ashthavinayak, which has made big movies in the past like Jab We Met and Golmaal Returns, wanted Maharathi to be a small film in these times of the global economic crisis and so didn’t want to cross the pre-set budget for the movie. But when such a talented ensemble cast like Boman, Naseer, Om and Paresh was put together, the budget obviously went overboard.

As the film was almost threatening to get delayed the actors decided to slash their usual fees to make the film happen. Says a source close to the film: “A couple of the actors have hardly taken any money to do the film... their love for the script got them going.”

If only the big stars could take a cue.
