Upbeat Karim urges caution

Calcutta: Mohun Bagan coach Karim Bencharifa on Sunday cautioned his boys against complacency and lauded the team for the fighting spirit they showed against JCT, playing with 10 men for more than 45 minutes.

“I’m very happy for the team… We’re not yet there (where we want to be)… We’re on the edge. But there are signs that we’ll compete (for the title),” Bencharifa said after their 2-0 win on Sunday.

“It’s time to keep our heads on our shoulders and stay humble.”

The Moroccan coach also said that his team are ready for any situation during the course of a match.

“People who follow our practice know we get ourselves ready for every situation. The team knows exactly what to do when we’re a goal down or playing with 10 men,” he said.

He also showered special words of praise on the two seniors in the side — Bhaichung Bhutia and Jose Ramirez Barreto.

“Both of them took a lot of workload… They went for every single ball, every single header and every single challenge,” Bencharifa said.

JCT coach Sukhwinder Singh blamed his side’s lack of finishing for Sunday’s defeat.

“We got two golden chances but we wasted them. And then the penalty changed everything,” Sukhwinder said after the match.
