Dibrugarh, Nov. 16: The menís team of Dibrugarh University today entered the quarter-finals of the inter-university (east zone) badminton competition, defeating DDU Gorakhpur University 3-0 at the Bhimbor Deori indoor stadium of Dibrugarh University.
Imtiaz Wasim Khanikar of Dibrugarh University defeated his rival, Dharmendra Kumar, 14-21, 21-13, 21-18 in the first singles match.
In the second singles, Bidyut Deori defeated Manish Kumar Yadav 21-15, 14-21, 21-14 to make it 2-0 for Dibrugarh University.
In the doubles, the Dibrugarh University pair of Imtiaz Wasim Khanikar and Rajib Baruah faced a stiff challenge from their rivals, Dharmendra Kumar and Suraj Bhatt.
The Kumar-Bhatt duo however, went down fighting 22-20, 21-15.
The Dibrugarh University team had earlier blanked Berhampur University 3-0 in a preliminary-round match this morning.
Sambalpur University defeated University of Burdwan 3-1, Banaras Hindu University outplayed Tezpur University 3-0, DDU Gorakhpur University defeated Vinoba Bhave University 3-0, Ranchi University triumphed over Pt Ravi Shankar University 3-0 and Manipur University outplayed B.C. Krishi University 3-0.
In the womenís section, Dibrugarh University defeated Banaras Hindu University 2-0, Ranchi University beat Berhampur University 2-0, while Manipur University defeated L.N. Mithila University 2-0.
Dibrugarh University vice-chancellor K.K. Deka inaugurated the meet on Saturday. However, only 18 Universities out of the 34 ó who had confirmed their participation ó turned up for the tournament.
The three-day meet will end on Monday. The East Zone meet will be followed by the All-India inter-university badminton competition at the same venue from Thursday.
