Northeast council on BJP menu

New Delhi, Nov. 15: Building on the Assam blasts, the BJP today called for the formation of a Northeast Security Council on the lines of the National Security Council.

Party president Rajnath Singh said in Aizawl today that such a council would comprehensively deal with all security-related issues of the entire region in a pattern similar to that of the National Security Council.

He alleged largescale smuggling of contraband, narcotics and arms especially from the border areas in the Northeast.

One of the high priorities of the NDA government “when it gets elected to power” would be to ensure foolproof fencing in the Northeast, especially along borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, he said.

Singh said the fencing would be on the lines of the onealong the Indo-Pak border.

Trashing the communal tag, he flaunted “coalition governments in Christian-majority states of Nagaland and Meghalaya”.

The BJP will stress development in Mizoram including that of the Chakmas, Hmar and Reang communities, he said.

While addressing an election rally of Reang tribal refugees at Gachhirampara under Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura, Singh iterated his demand for a Northeast Security Council and promised to constitute a district council for the Reang-dominated contiguous areas of Mizoram, reports our special correspondent from Agartala. “It is a matter of deep sorrow that you are refugees in your own country. But let me assure you that once the NDA comes to power, we will form a separate district council for you in Mizoram.”
