Body in septic tank

Islampur, Nov. 14: The body of a 65-year-old was recovered from a septic tank at Sharanja in Karandighi today.

Tepua Das had been missing for the past one month and was suspected to have been killed by his cousin Bahadur. The septic tank belongs to Bahadur. The duo had been engaged in a dispute over land. Bahadur and his family members are missing, the police said.


Jail term

Siliguri: Shankar Saha, a resident of Kharibari, was sentenced to two years of imprisonment for possessing heroin. Pinaki Ranjan Jha, additional sessions judge, fast track second court, also fined him Rs 10,000 and three more months in jail if Saha failed to pay the money. Saha was arrested on September 2004 for possessing 10gm of the drug. He was out on bail.


Run over

Balurghat: SankhaSuvra Biswas (12), a Class VII student of Banshihari High School, was run over by a Malda-bound pick-up van in front of the institution on Friday. The students and teachers rushed the boy to the Banshihari hospital. From there, he was taken to the Raiganj district hospital, where he was declared dead.


AC coaches

Siliguri: The Northeast Frontier Railway has put new AC three-tier coaches with 72 berths, instead of the earlier 64-berths, in three pairs of trains. The trains are 5761/5762 Alipurduar-Ranchi bi-weekly Express, 5707/5708 Katihar-Amritsar Express and 5718/5716 Kishanganj-Ajmer Garib Nawaj tri-weekly Express. The NFR has also decided to run the bi-weekly Rajdhani Special between Guwahati and New Delhi four more times. The train will leave Guwahati at 1.45pm every Tuesday and Saturday from November 18-29. The one from New Delhi will leave at 2pm every Sunday and Thursday from November 16-27.


Brawl arrest

Siliguri: The GRP at New Jalpaiguri station arrested four persons, suspected to be paramilitary force personnel, for creating nuisance in a drunken state on Friday. They were picked up from the Sealdah-bound Darjeeling Mail after the co-passengers complained.
