Man dies in quarry mishap

Shillong, Nov. 13: A labourer, Hussain Ali, was killed and a truck driver was trapped under the debris when a huge boulder fell into a stone quarry at Mikuli near Pillangkata in Ri Bhoi district, around 110km from here this morning, police said.

According to the police, the accident occurred around 3.30am when the labourers of a private stone quarry were loading stone chips onto two trucks.

While Ali succumbed to his injuries at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, the truck driver, Mohammad Amjad Khan, is still trapped under the debris.

Eight labourers were also injured when the boulder fell into the quarry.

The depth of the quarry prevented the police from conducting a rescue operation.

They later removed the damaged trucks from the accident site.

Of the eight others injured, four were released from GMCH after first aid.

The quarry owners were present when the accident took place.

The police, quoting the injured labourers, said the boulder slid down the hillock nearby while loading of stone chips was in progress.
