Ranchi, Nov. 13: The Burdwan University (BU) clinched the men’s title at the inter-zone inter-university table tennis tournament that concluded at the Golden Jubilee hall of Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, here today. The women’s title was bagged by the University of Madras (UM) team.
The final matches in both the segment were one sided shows.
The BU boys outplayed the team of Madras University in the finals. They scored 3-0. Soumya Nandi defeated Prabhakaran 11-6, 13-11, and 11-3 in the first singles. This lead was maintained by Sumit Kundu who outplayed Sathi Shwaran 11-6, 13-11, 8-11, 7-11, and 11-8. In the third and decisive match, Deepanjan defeated N. Vishal 11-5, 11-8, 7-11, and 11-4.
In the women’s category, the University of Madras team scored 3-0 to beat the team of the University of Calcutta. The dark horse A.V. Nivedita, who had beaten the Olympian Neha Agrawal of Delhi yesterday, today took four games to beat Arpita of Calcutta, 11-4, 14-12, 7-11, and 11-6. The lead given by her was maintained by W.V. Agni, who overcame the challenge of Naranita 11-9, 12-10, and 11-9. In the third game, Satyabhama scored over Deepanvita 11-8,11-9and 11-7.
In the play off for the third and fourth places in the women’s category, Delhi University girls defeated Mumbai varsity 3-1.
In the play off for third and fourth places in men’s category, Mumbai University beat Delhi 3-1. The Mumbai victory was led by Aman.
The highlight of the inter-zone matches was the tussle between Olympian Neha Agrawal and A.P. Nivedita in the semi-finals.
