Realtor shot at
A 32-year-old realtor was shot twice on the back in Behala by an unidentified person on Thursday evening. Police said Bablu Mondal, a resident of Behala, was returning home when he was shot at. He was admitted to a private hospital. No one has been arrested yet.
Death
A 71-year-old Bangladeshi national died on a Chennai-Calcutta Kingfisher flight late on Wednesday. Ayesha Begum had gone to Chennai with family members for treatment. She was suffering from kidney and liver ailments. She was released from hospital after doctors declared her fit. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Flight path
Air Indias Aizawl-Calcutta flight had to hover over Calcutta airport for five minutes on Thursday afternoon after the pilot noticed birds on the flight path. The flight was given clearance to land at 3.30pm.
One held
Debi Das, 56, was arrested at Calcutta airport on Wednesday for allegedly tampering with his visa. The resident of Haryana arrived at Calcutta airport from Bangkok on a private airline. Immigration officials detected that two pages of his passport that had the visa stamp had been tampered with.
Stolen rods
Two persons were arrested and 10 tonnes of stolen iron rods recovered from a godown at Raghudebbati Mistripara, in Salkia, on Thursday evening. The godown belonged to J. Mistri, a Congress member of the Sankrail panchayat samiti. The police said a truck containing iron rods was stolen from Bally on November 10. Mistri is absconding.
Party flags
A few flags and pavilions set up by the CPM beside VIP Road in Teghoria on Wednesday was found burnt on Thursday morning. A complaint was filed at Baguiati police station.
Mishap
The driver of a Tata Sumo was beaten up after he knocked down a middle-aged cyclist in Ultadanga on Wednesday night. Police said Gopabandhu Jana, the driver, tried to speed off after hitting the cyclist but local youths chased and caught up with him. Jana was rescued by the police. The injured was admitted to hospital.
