Jamshedpur, Nov. 12: History is just not about dates and data, it is more than that.
To make the subject interesting, the history club of Loyola School today organised an inter-school event — Time Unplugged.
Perhaps it was the first time that the students focused on the positive aspects of studying history.
They highlighted the consequences of war at a panel discussion Voice Out. The topic for the discussion was “Good that wars have done”. The students discussed about the inventions that took place after wars were fought. One interesting fact that came out during the session was that canned foods were discovered in the 18th century when Napolean Bonaparte were faced with food crisis. A prize was announced to anyone who could develop a means of preserving food for the armymen to eat during march.
Winners of the discussion were Loyola School followed by Sacred Heart Convent School and Hill Top School.
“Students think the subject is boring but we want to break that notion,” said Shalini Sharan, the moderator of the history club.
About 10 schools participated in the event presenting their views on history and evolution.
Another event, On Spot Exhibition, focused on the evolution of technology and housing. Students had to chose from topics like infrastructure, communication technology, food and shipping.
ADLS Sunshine School showed the evolution of telephones while Hill Top School pupils displayed stages of pre-historic to modern-day living.
“Not only students but parents should also understand that arts subjects can be interesting. There is a scope of research in this subject also and it is not only about dates and incidents,” said Sangeeta Dandapat, the president of the history club.
Sacred Heart Convent School bagged the first prize while Sri Krishna Public School and Rajendra Vidyalaya were judged as first and second runners-up respectively.
