Jamshedpur, Nov. 10: Jharkhand sure is taking the silk route to success. Its famous tussar is all set to go places.
The Jharkhand Silk, Textile and Handicraft Development Corporation (Jharcraft), a unit under the state industry department, has bagged a Rs 4-crore order to export the organic variety of silk.
Nasreen Impex, a business partner of Jharcraft, will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Murarka Organics Private Limited, a Jaipur-based exporting house, in this connection at Jharkhand Bhawan in New Delhi tomorrow.
Managing director of Jharcraft and special secretary of the state industry department Dhirendra Kumar, who left for the country capital today, said this was the first time such a huge order had been received by the corporation since its inception.
“Our efforts have yielded results. This is the first big order the corporation has bagged. The MoU will be signed for a marketing tie-up with the export house. We will supply organic silk worth at least Rs 2 crore to the purchaser annually,” he said. Kumar said getting the “organic” tag from OneCert Asia, a US-based certification agency, helped in bagging the order.
“The MoU will be effective for two years. We will supply over 20,000 stoles and 6,000 tussar saris,” he said.
The Jharcraft managing director also said that talks were on with textile users in Noida, Kochi, Pune and Calcutta for bulk supply of organic silk produced by state artisans.
From August this year, the corporation began selling organic tussar. It appointed Nasreen Impex as its business partner for marketing and promoting silk produced by weavers based in Kuchai and Kharswan.
Last year, the state had produced 150 metric tonne of tussar — the highest in the country.
This time, the organic certification issued by the US-based agency helped Jharcraft sell its products at a premium.
Corporation officials said their focus is on bulk sale rather than retail because of the high profit margin.
Jharkhand has around 15,000 weavers across East and West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharsawan, Dhanbad, Palamau and the Santhal Pargana region — Dumka, Godda, Pakur and Sahebganj.
