Lake back on makeover list of urban body

Ranchi, Nov. 10: Work on beautification of the Line Tank Lake, in the heart of the state capital , which had begun way back in 2006, will commence once again.

In a board meeting of the Ranchi Regional Development Authority (RRDA), the capital city’s apex town planning wing, it was decided today that a fresh look would be taken of the lake to assess the scale of work under the beautification drive. The board decided to undertake the project on priority basis.

The lake is one of the most polluted water bodies in Ranchi. While it serves as a convenient outlet for the numerous sewerage lines of the surrounding residential areas and commercial complexes that have sprung up all around, many garage owners also use the body to clean vehicles including the trucks and trailers.

Foundation stone for beautification of the lake was laid by the then finance and urban development minister Raghubar Das way back in 2006. The state government had even sanctioned Rs 1.60crore for the ambitious project. The minister, while laying the foundation stone, had assured that the project would be completed within a fixed time frame so the residents of Ranchi could be gifted with a safe place where, they along with their families, could spend their time in leisure.

The fall of the then BJP led Arjun Munda government in 2006 stalled all work on the project. For the next two years, the project remained on back burners.

It was only in December 2007, after a lapse of nearly two years, that work began on the project. However till date, all that has been done is the construction of a guard wall along the eastern side of the lake.

The RRDA Board, taking note of the dismal situation, today authorised its vice-chairman to take a fresh look at the lake and to take effective steps to speed up the beautification process.
