Students find ways to fight pollution

Ranchi, Nov. 10: In a bid to foster scientific temper among the budding scientists, the annual science exhibition, Spectrum, was held at St Xavier’s School today.

The students from Classes VI to XII showcased models based on environment and life sciences while suggesting methods to fight pollution and water crisis.

The covered subjects like global warming, air pollution, environmental concerns, tsunami detection, alternative source of energy, rain water harvesting, bio medical waste disposal, medicinal plant identification, anatomy of heart and brain and cultivation of plants without soil.

Co-ordinator of science exhibition, M. Majumdar said the objective of the exhibition was to facilitate the understanding in basic sciences and also to inculcate a culture of scientific thinking among the students.

“Along with the regular studies, it is also important that a child learns to develop his own knowledge and enhances his thinking capabilities,” the co-ordinator added.

The students had amply suggested various remedies to combat air pollution caused by the increasing number of vehicles in the state.

“We have tried to depict through our models how the commoners are suffer- ing from lung diseases due to air pollution caused by emission of poisonous gases sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide,” said students of class VII, Aman Dayal and Sushil Shishul, who had prepared a model based on air pollution.

Chanakya Mishra and Rajat More, both students of class IX, had showcased model on rain water harvesting that showed their concern for the rapid depletion of underground water.” Every one has to think judiciously to conserve water as in the coming years, water crisis could create a war like situation in the world,” the duo explained.

The traffic snarls which have gripped the state Capital thereby leaving little space for the pedestrians to walk, have also become cause of worry for many. But the twelfth graders Pratibha Barla and Shalini Singh through their model, Traffic administration in Ranchi, chalked out an easy way out.

Father Ajit Khess, the principal of the school said this type of annual exhibition brings out the talent of the students who are in regular touch with their studies.” They get an opportunity to develop their vision for the future through the models,” added Khess.
