Panel to seek new Games deadline

Jamshedpur, Nov. 10: Jharkhand Olympic Association (JOA) is trying to extend the deadline for the completion of necessary infrastructure and construction for the 34th National Games, yet again.

A source said that the state panel has finished the “necessary spadework” in convincing the IOA to extend its December 1 deadline. “Dates for the 35th National Games to be held at Kerala in 2010 has been announced. There is a possibility that the IOA would extend dates for Jharkhand to 2009,” the sources said.

The IOA, the country’s apex sports body, is likely to announce fresh dates for the Games at a meeting in New Delhi. It has sent summons to Syed Matloob Hashmi, the JOA secretary, to be present in Delhi at that time.

Officials said IOA president Suresh Kalmadi has summoned Hashmi to get a “clearer picture” regarding the delay and discuss an extension.

Hashmi confirmed to The Telegraph over phone that he has received a call from the IOA. “I am heading for Delhi on November 14,” he said, declining to comment on the agenda of the meeting.

He, on the other hand, evaded the question as to why the involved agencies failed to meet the November 10 deadline.

“We are on the job. The meeting in Delhi is Games specific and several other matters would also be discussed,” he said.

Sources confirm that JOA president R.K. Anand is also expected to be present at the meeting. “The schedule would be discussed across the table. There are possibilities that the IOA could announce a new date,” the source said.

During his visit to Ranchi in September 2008, Kalmadi had instructed all agencies, including those responsible for the mega-sports complex and Hotwar Games Village, to finish work by November 10.

Now, the two agencies responsible for the sports complex and games village have explained that they would require three to four months extra to complete work.

The Games Technical Conduct Committee is also expected to visit venues to take stock. “Our visit here would help us to get a clearer picture about the status and would keep authorities on toes,” said a committee member on condition of anonymity.
