Sumptuous scoops

Bored of vanilla and chocolate ice cream? Sick of strawberry and mango? Why don’t you try wasabi, green tea or nalen gur instead?

This one is for all those fatigued sweet teeth out there, that have been longing for a little gastronomic adventure. Anuvrat Pabrai, the former owner of one of Calcutta’s oldest ice cream brands, Tulika’s, has launched a range of gourmet-style ice creams with flavours that are almost astonishing for their ingenuity.

Fresh & Naturelle is the name of the brand, about a year old now, that has been finding its way into a number of restaurant kitchens across town. Anuvrat and his sons Kunal and Nishant Pabrai “wanted to give ice cream a makeover”, to help it out of the rut it had seemed to hit in town.

Their creamy, cold goodies are not flavoured artificially and are blended with real ingredients. Caution: this is not one for the weight watchers.

Fresh & Naturelle goes beyond the usual spread of chocolate, vanilla and butterscotch with specials like sitaphal, tender coconut, Sichuan pepper corn, galangal, nalen gur and rose sandesh ice creams. There is also a range of spicy picks like ginger, aniseed and cinnamon. “The paan-flavoured ice cream was sold out during Diwali and we are planning to get a patent on our nalen gur recipe,” said Kunal Pabrai. They recommend serving a scoop of nalen gurer ice cream with hot, syrupy gur. It’s enough to make you abandon hot chocolate fudge forever, they promise.

Fresh & Naturelle supplies to The Park, HHI, Mainland China, Zaranj, Bhojohari Manna and 6 Ballygunge Place. Three retail outlets in the city are also in the pipeline within the next month or so, one of them on Park Street.

A scoop is priced between Rs 40 and Rs 60.
