State techies bag awards

Ranchi, Nov. 7: The metallurgy researchers of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) are in celebration mood these days after bagging six awards from the Union steel ministry.

The upbeat atmosphere was seen at Mecon also, where the power engineers and the steel engineers bagged two gold medals for their research.

The awards would be handed over to the SAIL researchers at a three-day function in New Delhi from November 14. The award winning researchers are employed with the Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS), Ranchi, a unit of SAIL.

The Mecon engineers would be felicitated at Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh during the next Indian engineers’ congress on December 12.

Jagdish Singh, the executive director, RDCIS, has been awarded with the prestigious O.P. Jindal gold medal for his contributions in improvement of steel plant performances.

Mridul Kumar Sardar will be receiving the metallurgist of the year award for his contribution in the area of steel making. Young metallurgist award will go to Sanjeev Kumar for his contribution in head hardening of rails.

Lakshman Tiwari, who has been active in developing special quality magnesium-carbon bricks in steel ladles, will receive the Essar gold medal. Sanjoy paridaand Rishi S Kumar will jointly receive Mecon award for their contribution in process engineering.

The Mecon engineers who bagged the prestigious Dr. M Visvesvaraya and SAIL gold medals include A.K. Saxena, C.D. Goswami, Kamal Sarkar, Rana Chakravarty, R.C. Khowala, Subir Bhattacharya, P. Misra, and U.K. Viswakarma.

They had presented papers on role of power sector in providing energy security in the country and demand estimation for steel in the domestic market.
