Actor dies of
Television actor Shiladitya Patranabis died of renal failure in a city nursing home on Friday morning. He was 41. Shiladitya was admitted to Kothari Medical Centre and Research Institute on October 14 with jaundice. His condition kept deteriorating. The actor was an alcoholic and had been to rehabilitation centres on two occasions. Shiladitya began his acting career with the Doordarshan serial Sonar Sansar in the early-1990s. He was still working in the Zee Bangla serials Rajpath and Rani Kahini.
Mallika Karmakar, a 32-year-old homemaker, killed herself on Friday morning by jumping into the Hooghly. Police said she left her in-lawsí house in Ariadaha early in the morning. Her body was fished out around 7am. A preliminary investigation revealed she had a fight with her husband. No suicide note was found.
A taxi knocked down a 32-year-old cyclist on Friday afternoon at the Mayurbhanj Road-DH Road crossing on Friday. Prasanta Saha, a resident of Thakurpukur, was taken to SSKM Hospital with serious head injuries but was declared dead on arrival. The taxi driver fled but the vehicle was impounded.
Several officials and baggage handlers in Calcutta airportís international terminal who were on duty on Thursday night, when environment secretary M.L. Meena flew to Tokyo, were interrogated on Friday regarding the theft of Rs 10,000 from his luggage. Meena discovered the loss in Tokyo and lodged a complaint.
A fire broke out in a plastic unit in Pashupati Bhattacharya Lane in Behala on Friday afternoon. Three engines took nearly two hours to bring the blaze under control. The cause of fire and the extent of damage were not known till late on Friday. Police are investigating whether the unit had a licence.
Jadavpur University will confer honorary doctorate degrees on singer Manna Dey, Nobel laureate R.K. Pachauri and astrophysicist J.V. Narlikar. The degrees will be awarded during the universityís annual convocation on December 24.
A written examination to be conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board of Patna, Muzaffarpur and Ranchi on Sunday has been postponed, officials said on Friday. The next date of the examination has not been decided yet.
