Imphal, Nov. 6: Manipur bus operators will resume services between Imphal and other cities of the Northeast from tomorrow after staying off the roads for 14 days.
Nearly 500 buses of the All Manipur Inter-state Bus Association suspended services from October 24 after cadres of the Kuki Liberation Army/Kuki Liberation Organisation set fire to a bus bound for Guwahati in Karbi Anglong on October 23.
A woman and her son-in-law died in the fire while 10 other passengers were injured.
The outfit said they took action against the bus for the association’s failure to pay annual tax.
“We will resume services because the state government promised us security and ex gratia to the families of the victims and also compensation for the bus owner,” said Budha Luwang, the president of the bus association.
Travellers between Imphal and Guwahati and Shillong had to spend extra to travel during the strike.
Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh assured a delegation of the association on Tuesday that his government had taken up measures to tighten security along the highways.
However, the indefinite economic blockade imposed by the Senapati District Students Association will continue.
The association imposed the blockade from Sunday, in protest against the government’s failure to repair the Imphal-Mao sector of the Imphal-Dimapur highway.
The truck drivers also extended support to the blockade, saying they were also suffering because of the bad roads.
As a result, more than 100 loaded trucks bound for Imphal are stranded at Mao gate.
