Manipur boys & girls win titles

Imphal, Nov. 4: Manipur bagged both the men’s and women’s titles of the 2nd East Zone Sepak Takraw Championship at Khuman Lampak Indoor Hall today.

In women’ regu final today, Manipur unseated defending champions Assam 2-0. Orissa settled for the third place. Manipur won the first set 21-6 and the second with 21-8 points.

The team won all its three matches in the league rounds while Assam managed two victories from three matches and Orissa could muster one win. Nagaland lost all three matches.

O. Jeni Devi, M. Aruna Devi, M. Santi Devi, A. Maipak Devi and W. Milana Devi represented Manipur, while Thoinu Chanu, Romina Singha, Bebita Singha, Ibeton Singha and Padmini Singha represented Assam in the match today.

In the men’s regu final, Mizoram succumbed to Manipur 2-0. Manipur won the first set 21-10. The team ultimately prevailed with 21-18 points for the champion’s title, while Mizoram settled for the runners-up slot.

L. Bhumeshor Singh, H. Kirankumar Singh, S. Romesh Singh, Kh. Rahul Singh and M. Nanao Singh represented Manipur, while Mizoram had the service of C. Lalrosanga, Chunglawm Zuala, F. Lalhmingmawia, Zalianthanga and L. Pekwanthanga. Nagaland bagged the third place. Manipur won all five matches in the league, while Mizoram won four and Nagaland were victorious on three occasions.

The 19th Senior National Sepak Takraw Championship will get under way tomorrow. Apart from the six teams participating in the just concluded East Zone Sepak Takraw meet, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Rajasthan have already arrived in the state among the 18 states confirmed for the meet.

Maharashtra and Haryana will reach Imphal tomorrow and other teams, including Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Delhi, Kerala, Jammu & Kashmir, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are on their way.

Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat Singh and minister (youth and sports affairs) N. Biren Singh will grace the inauguration tomorrow.
