Exploring Kaziranga to its full
The move to introduce trekking expeditions at the Kaziranga National Park, when it opens on November 1, is good news for tourists who flock to the park every winter.
Although the abode of the one-horned rhinoceros needs no new advertisements to woo tourists, introduction of add-ons like a trekking trip would help tourists explore more of Kaziranga’s natural endowments than just the ‘vulnerable’ species.
Kaziranga is a rich bio-diversity zone with numerous plants and rare birds in its repertoire. Not many probably know that the water bodies inside the national park have several varieties of tortoises, some even smaller than the palm of a human hand, rarefish and water birds.
Hence, the trekking expedition inside the famed park would give visitors an opportunity to discover a vibrant Kaziranga beyond the rhino.

Time to streamline traffic
It is appreciable that the transport authorities in Guwahati have initiated steps to enforce use of seat belts while driving cars and helmets while riding motorcycles.
However, Guwahati is probably the only city in the country where even motorcycle riders use mobile phones, not to speak of the car drivers, which often results in accidents and traffic snarls.
Apart from the perennial traffic congestion caused by the city buses and autorickshaws along all the major roads, drunken driving continues to be a major menace in the city.
The traffic snarls along the busy GS Road are apparently due to the long stretches of road dividers without intersections.
It is time the enforcement authorities take necessary steps to regulate the commercial vehicles and punish drunk drivers and those using mobile phones while on the move.
