Alipurduar, Oct. 29: A fish-seller succumbed to injuries after he was attacked by a gang of extortionists at Atiabari Tea Estate in Kalchini last night. Somra Munda died on way to the garden hospital.
Earlier in the day, the gang had attacked five traders in the weekly market. Three of the injured have been hospitalised. Gang leader Umesh Shau was arrested.
According to residents of the area, last night around ten, the extortionists had raided Somra’s residence at the No 12 Line of the garden and demanded money from him.
The 28-year-old refused to pay up and told the gang members that he could not sell fish in the market on the day because of them. Following an altercation, Mukesh Shau, Umesh’s brother, attacked the fish-seller with a sharp weapon. Somra’s family members lodged an FIR.
The weekly market was abandoned yesterday following the attack on the five traders.
Chanchal Das, the secretary of the Kalchini Hat Byabsayee Samiti, said: “The weekly market will not be held till the culprits are arrested. We will not attend other hats in the block if police cannot assure our safety.”
S.R. Misra, the additional superintendent of police in Alipurduar, said Mukesh had fled the area.
