Rain saves the day for hosts

Dibrugarh/Guwahati, Oct. 26: Rain and bad light forced the Assam versus Orissa C.K. Nayudu match to a draw on the final day today at the Tinsukia District Sports Association stadium.

Unseasonal rain ensured that the hosts — who were tottering at 22 for the loss of three wickets and chasing a target of 471 in the second innings at the end of Day 3 — got one point, while Orissa got three, including a bonus point.

The umpires, S. Lahiri and S.M. Yusuf, called off the match at 3pm after there were no signs of improvement in the ground conditions.

Earlier, the Orissa batsmen continued to dominate the Assam bowlers on Day 3.

Orissa opener Tukuna Sahu who was unbeaten on 108, went on to make a century with a 182-run knock.

However, his opening partner, N. Behera, who was also unbeaten on 110, could not add much to his overnight total and was out for 119. Bibhu Dutta Panda, who had created havoc during Assam’s first innings, claiming five wickets, showed that he could also bat well with an explosive 50, including five sixes.

Sandip Mulia contributed 50. Orissa declared their second innings at 425, losing three wickets in 121.1 overs, 48 minutes after lunch.

Assam continued with their disastrous run in the second innings, losing openers Chandan Rawat (0) and Pritam Debnath (0) with only three runs on the board.

Skipper Gokul Sarma (11) and Utpal Medhi (0) were at the crease when the match was called off.

The ACA was quick to make changes in the team owing to the “dismal” performance of some players and withdrew a couple of them from Ranji duty.

Amjad Ali, Pankaj Saikia and Avijit Singha Roy, among the standbys for the first match, have been drafted in the 15-member team.

Chandan Rawat, Sadeq Imran Choudhury and Chanakya Sarma were axed for poor performance, while Kunal Saikia has been named in the Ranji team.

Tarjinder Singh has also been named in the Ranji team but will play against Jharkhand at Nehru Stadium in Guwahati from October 30 to November 2.

The team: Gokul Sarma (captain), Utpal Medhi, Amzad Ali (wk), Pritam Debnath, Tarjinder Singh, Raihan Mazumdar, Vikrant Yadav, Mridul Dutta, Prasanta Sonowal, Parthiv Hazarika, Prakash Bhagat, Bhaskarjyoti Barman, Pankaj Saikia, Avijit Singha Roy and Vishal Tyagi.
