Balcony collapse

A first-floor balcony of a building under construction collapsed around 11.30pm in Kalitala Bose Lane in Beleghata on Sunday night. Three fire tenders rushed to the spot and rescued a few people who were trapped under the debris for 20 minutes. Some of the trapped men suffered minor injuries.

Airport arrest

Pandi Selvi Kannan, 31, was arrested from Calcutta airport’s international terminal on Sunday for allegedly tampering with her passport. The Chennai-resident arrived in Calcutta from Bangkok on an Air India Express flight on Sunday afternoon.

Train route

South Eastern Railway will restore the Howrah-Vasco Amaravati Express on its normal route from November 1. The train will run four days a week from Howrah on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and from Vasco on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

Hunger strike

Fifty workers of Bengal Chemical’s Panihati unit started a hunger strike outside the company gate on Sunday, demanding dues. Prabir Guha, one of the agitating workers, said they would continue the strike until their demands are met.

Murder cry

Kalipada Parui, a resident of Sukantapally in Khardah, was allegedly killed by his in-laws on Sunday. The 35-year-old used to live with his in-laws, said neighbours. According to officers of Khardah police station, Parui was taken to Balaram Sevamnadir Hospital, a state government-run healthcare unit, in the evening. “When doctors declared him dead on arrival and informed the police, those who had accompanied him left with the body,” said an officer of the police station.

Flight returns

The Calcutta-Agartala Air India flight at 9am had to return to the city on Sunday after it failed to land at Agartala airport because of bad weather. The aircraft, with nearly a hundred on board, hovered over the Tripura capital for several minutes before returning to Calcutta. It touched down in the city at 11.30am. The flight has been rescheduled for tomorrow.

Bike stolen

A motorcycle was stolen from Dent Mission Road in Kidderpore on Saturday night. A police complaint was lodged by the owner of the two-wheeler, Mohammad Feroz Abid, a resident of CGR Road.

Suicide

Kanai Bhattacharya, the 42-year-old cashier of Railway Mail Service who committed suicide on Saturday by jumping in front of a Metro Railway train at MG Road, had been depressed for a couple of days. The Uttarpara resident was to be transfered to another department.
