Bacchus beckons

Sanjoy Ghosh shudders when people make the comparison, but it has to be said that the Bengali painter is in good company. He is in an exclusive club that had men such as Picasso, Chagall and Dali as members. The masters all painted labels for wine companies — something that Ghosh has now done. His works will adorn three labels of wines produced by an Italian wine company, Vin’ Opera. Ghosh, who had an exhibition of his works in Delhi last week, is ecstatic. But mention the illustrious company he is in and the artist turns pale. “Please don’t even take my name when you are mentioning the masters,” says the 50-year-old who has been painting since he was a child. But Ghosh has just one dream — of chucking his job in an insurance company and doing full-time art. “I am waiting for that to happen,” he says. Let’s drink to that.

Dé and the band

Months after Shobhaa Dé’s Superstar India was released with much fanfare across the country, the queen of rag seems to be drumming up quite a storm. Hot off the press comes the news that her latest book has inspired a team of musicians to come up with a CD that complements the book, and is due for release anytime now. Mainly classical, the tracks on the CD —paeans sung in honour of the great nation — will be interspersed with extracts from the book, read out by none other than Dé herself. This is not just her year — the writer turned 60 a year after the country did — but her Dé as well.

Look, Tootsies

How do you hide hairy arms? Ask Rohit Shetty, director of Golmaal Returns. Trust film-makers to milk the cross-dressing theme to death. In Shetty’s case, it’s being milked four times over — all in that one film. In one scene, the film’s four heroes are at a shopping mall which is only admitting women to its premises on the occasion of Women’s Day. But of course, Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade desperately need to be there. So what do they do? They do drag. All very well, but how on earth did hirsute Devgan hide all the hair on his body? Or was he making a feminist statement — hair is hot — as well?

The name’s Jaitley

Celina Jaitley. And she’s on cloud nine. Last heard, the bikini babe of Bollywood had just bagged a role opposite Sean Connery in a Hollywood flick titled Quest of Sheherzade, scheduled to be directed by Ken Khan, who makes his directorial transition from being the technical director for The Lord of the Rings.Based on the Arabian Nights, the movie also stars Orlando Bloom. Clearly, the Calcutta girl, who plays an Iranian princess, is in hallowed company. Shooting for the new film begins in January, and frankly, her fans —still fighting off the blues brought on by the dismal Money Hai To Honey Hai — can’t wait.

New look is good look

When Sachin Tendulkar walks out onto the field for the third Test against Australia this Diwali, brace yourself for a “cool and fashionable” look from the master blaster. For that’s what his new hairstyle is supposed to be like, reveals an insider who recently saw the cricketer going in for an image overhaul soon after reaching the magic 12,000-run figure. And the stylist, in his case, is none other than Aalim, the man responsible for shaping the locks of people such as Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, M.S. Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Shoaib Akhtar in the past. Well, here’s hoping that the new look will spur a fresh spate of runs from the icon’s willow — his fans will surely be more pleased with the latter!
