Minister supports convoy drivers

Jamshedpur, Oct. 20: Revenue and land reforms min- ister Dulal Bhuiyan today came out in support of Telco Convoy Driver Mazdoor Sangh that laid seize at Cummins yard for the past four days disrupting chassis delivery of Tata Motors.

Telco Convoy Driver Mazdoor Sangh and All India Convoy Workers’ Union are on loggerheads over the over-date delivery issue.

Bhuiyan, addressing a public meeting outside Cummins yard today, said the drivers on strike would not allow delivery of chassis till their demands are met.

The protesters claimed that they should be given the right for over-date booking as their jobs are not permanent. However the registered union of Tata Motors, All India Convoy Workers’ Union maintained that over-date booking cannot be allowed as it has been declared illegal by the district administration.

“The protesters want that they should be allowed to book chassis irrespective of the fact that they have delivered it at the destination or not. This cannot be allowed,” said Balvinder Singh, the general secretary of All India Convoy Workers’ Union.

Members of All India Convoy Workers’ Union said the registered drivers book the chassis that is delivered to its destination by other drivers working under them.

There are 975 convoy workers in Tata Motors that drive the vehicles to far off places in the country each day.

Due to strike the drivers have stopped delivery of vehicles to the destinations and the convoy cars have been parked in Sumant Moolgaonkar Stadium at Telco Colony.

According to Bhuiyan, convoy workers are driving out vehicles from Cummins yard and parking them at vari- ous places. He warned the chassis delivery would not be allowed till their demands are met.

“We also want that the convoy workers’ to get their rights. All the drivers are supporting us and we are not going to budge from our stand this time. We also want that the drivers should be paid their provident funds, which they have been deprived of till now. Trade union of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Jharkhand Mazdoor Union is in support of the telco drivers’ union,” added Bhuiyan.

Singh however, claimed that all these issues are pending in the court and he cannot comment on it.

Later in the evening Dhalbhum sub-division officer called a meeting at his office between the two unions. However, Telco Convoy Driver Mazdoor Sangh members boycotted the meeting and no solution was reached.
