Grieving mother ends life

Balurghat, Oct. 16: A grief-stricken mother, unable to bear the death of her month-old son, committed suicide by hanging in a South Dinajpur village today.

Bhalo Sarkar, 28, a resident of Beldanga village in Kusmandi, had been depressed ever since she lost her child a month ago. The infant’s death probably prompted the mother to end her life, police said. The woman, married to a farmer for seven years, has a five-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son.


Workers back

Kurseong: Workers of Jogmaya Tea Estate near here resumed work on Wednesday after they had been paid their dues and bonus. All 250 workers had been on strike since September 25 demanding that they be paid bonus and 70 casual labourers be paid their dues immediately.


BSF in dock

Malda: Police have started a murder case against two BSF personnel for abducting and killing a 28-year-old resident of Baishnabnagar. Ali Hasan was taken away from his home by the BSF of the Sobhapur outpost on Saturday. His body was found on the banks of the Ganga on Thursday. The youth’s father had lodged a police complaint on Sunday.


Gold Cup

Gangtok: New Delhi Heroes defeated Mohun Bagan SAIL Football Academy 7-5 in a tie-breaker in a pre-quarter final match of All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament at Paljor Stadium here on Thursday. Both the teams had scored two goals each during the regulation time. In another pre quarter-final match, J & K Bank crushed United Sikkim Sporting Club 2-0.
