Man poisons wife & self

Alipurduar, Oct. 14: A man today forced his wife and three-year-old daughter to drink poison before consuming it himself.

Both the husband and wife died in Falakata Rural Hospital this evening, 15 minutes after they were admitted. Doctors said the couple’s daughter, Pramila, was out of danger but her sibling was missing.

Thirty-five-year-old Chandan Bhadra was drunk when he forced the poison on wife Bulbuli, the couple’s neighbours at Baganbari, 40km from here, said. All three had started screaming in pain after the poison went down their throats.

Seven-year-old Nabina fled when her father had approached her with the bottle of poison.

Shambhu Nag, Bulbuli’s father, has lodged an FIR with Falakata police station against Chandan.

He alleged that Chandan, who worked in a railway pantry car, used to frequently torture Bulbuli. “During Puja, she came to my house and didn’t want to go back. But we had forced her into returning.”

Dinesh Biswas, the block medical officer of Falakata, said: “It looked like that they had taken pesticide but we will able to confirm after receiving the post mortem report.” The police have started thorough search for Nabina.
