Smart fixes for your PC
Screenshots: (top to bottom) FreeRAM XP Pro, Google SketchUp and Recover Files

Last week I had a lot of problems with my five-year-old PC. It had become too slow and I had a trying time working on it. It was then that I went scouting for some software that would speed up my PC. In the process I discovered a few other amazing applications that I would like to share with you.

I realised that my machine’s main problem was the RAM. It was then that I stumbled upon a great utility, FreeRAM XP Pro. The software monitors the memory and optimises it. With a simple and attractive interface the state of the memory is reported to you and keeps the records in a log file that will help you diagnose a problem, if any. FreeRAM XP intelligently scales how much RAM is freed with your current system’s needs without slowing down your computer. FreeRAM XP Pro has been designed to be easy to use and can be easily customised by computer novices and experts alike. Google it and you will find the link to download the program.

EncryptOnClick

All of us who use shared computers like to hide some files from prying eyes. EncryptOnClick is a very easy to use program that lets you securely encrypt and decrypt files. EncryptOnClick is like hiring your own security guard who ensures the files you want to keep safe and out of view from others stay that way. The program features military grade encryption that is fully compatible with WinZip 9. Not only are your files encrypted, but they are also compressed. This reduces the size of the file, which is very useful if you are e-mailing and transmitting your encrypted files. The encrypted files can also be decrypted with WinZip 9.

Recover Files

How many times have you accidentally deleted files and then gone to empty your Recycle Bin. You would need to call in an expert at file recovery to get it back. But those days are gone.

Recover Files is an award-winning program that can undelete and recover deleted files. Even if the files have been removed from the Recycle Bin, network drive, compact flash card, portable devices, a DOS window, or from Windows Explorer by pressing Shift — Delete. Recover Files is small, fast, useful, practical and powerful. It has a clean, simple interface. Recover Files will work with Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista operating systems. It can be used to recover deleted files from all New Technology File System (NTFS) and File Allocation Table (FAT) partitions. The program supports all Windows file systems for hard and floppy drives, and image recovery from CompactFlash, SmartMedia, MultiMedia and Secure Digital cards. Recover Files quickly and effectively restores all those files that you may have deleted by mistake.

Evonsoft Computer Repair

In one of my earlier columns I had mentioned a program called Advanced Windows Care (the free version) that dramatically speeded up your PC. Spyware, registry problems, and junk files are a common cause of computer crashes and error messages. Evonsoft Computer Repair is another free software that allows you to safely clean and repair your computer’s system problems with just a simple mouse click. Evonsoft Computer Repair can safely remove spyware, clean registry, sweep privacy (private browsing history), and clean junk files. Like Advanced Windows Care, after scanning your PC it will fix the invalid entries, and your computer will become more stable and run faster.

Stripmail

Always clean up a mail before you forward them to your friends. StripMail is a utility that can be used for various purposes. It removes the characters “>” and “ ” from forwarded e-mails. It formats the text into paragraphs, making it easier to read. It also changes the text’s right margin, by indenting. It can only be used with e-mail clients like Outlook, etc, and will not work with web-based e-mail.

Google SketchUp

This one is a gem. Google SketchUp is a free, easy-to-learn 3D-modelling program. With a few simple tools it lets you create 3D models of houses, sheds, decks, home decor, and even airplanes. You can add details, textures, and glass to your models, and design with dimensional accuracy. You can place your finished models in Google Earth, share them with others by posting them to the 3D Warehouse, or print hard copies. Google SketchUp is a great way to discover if 3D modelling is right for you. Google SketchUp is free for personal use. You can get it at sketchup.google.com.

Send in your computer- related problems to askdoss@abpmail.com. The solutions will appear soon.
