Tiger at home

Calcutta, Oct. 12: A tiger entered Balai Mondal’s house on the fringes of the Sunderbans and took away a goat from his cattle shed last night.

The resident of Jubili village in Gosaba, South 24-Parganas, 280km from Calcutta, informed the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve this morning after he saw pug marks inside his mud house. Reserve director Neeraj Singhal said villagers had been asked to stay alert following regular incidents of tigers straying into villages.

Trafficker net

Alipurduar (Jalpai-guri): A 13-year-old girl was rescued from an alleged trafficker who had introduced himself as a policeman to her family. Bimal Barman, 38, and his wife Meena, who had rented a house 26km from here and befriended many local residents, have been arrested.

Widow killed

Chinsurah: Reba Das, 62, a widow, was allegedly beaten to death by her nephew and his wife here in Hooghly for property. Police said Sanjoy Das, 33, and his wife Seema, 30, had been eyeing the room she occupied in their ancestral house and her jewellery.
