Protests amid grenade attack

Imphal, Oct. 7: Unidentified men lobbed a hand grenade at the residence of an engineer in Imphal West district this morning.

The Imphal West residence of assistant engineer of the power department, Yumnam Chaoba Singh, was targeted around 7.30am. The engineer is currently posted in Thoubal division.

However, the grenade failed to explode. The police recovered the grenade and safely exploded it later.

The family members could not provide any clue to the police either on the identity or the motive of the attackers.

The attack comes four days after senior engineers and employees of the department held a sit-in at the head- office in Imphal against frequent abductions and grenade attacks on the engineers of the department. No group has claimed responsibility for today’s attack.

On September 9, two members of the Kangleipak Communist Party (City Meitei) had exploded a hand grenade at the residence of Kh. Khamba, superintending engineer of the power department, in Imphal East. No one was, however, injured in the attack.

The local residents nabbed the two attackers and handed them over to the police.

Party workers, meira paibis (women activists) of Kshetrigao constituency and supporters of an Opposition MLA today held demonstrations against Sunday night’s grenade attack on NCP member Thangjam Nandakishore Singh.

Nandakishore said he did not receive any threat or demand from any militant group and he did not suspect anyone. “I don’t have any enemy and I could not guess why I was targeted.”

He visited one of the sit-in venues at Kongba Nongthombam Leikai but did not take part in the demonstration.
