English on air for students

Ranchi, Sept. 29: The state is all set to introduce an interactive radio programme — Aao Angrezi Sikhein — for primary schoolchildren from October 2.

The programme is initiated by Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) in association with the All India Radio, Ranchi. As many as 150 lessons in English have been designed under the project.

Initially, it will cover Hazaribagh, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Chaibasa and Daltonganj, and based on the success, the JPEC plans to cover all the districts of the state.

The programme will be divided into two phases. The first phase will be for students of Class I while the second will cover those studying in Classes III and IV.

The 30-minute program me will be be aired on radio at 12.10pm every day, beginning October 2.

Pedagogue officer of JEPC Baikunth Pandey said: “Radio sets will be made available in each classroom and teachers will monitor the proceedings of the session.”

The students will also be offered tips on basic etiquette and manners during the programme. “They will be given five minutes to memorise the lesson. The entire lesson will be noted down by the teachers and will be revised later,” said the JPEC official.

The main object to start this programme is to bring students back to the classrooms through a different learning technique and improve their English language skills. “This interactive radio programme will help the children comprehend the language in a better way and, gradually, enable them to speak fluently,” Pandey said.

“We have introduced this concept so that students can communicate in English without any hesitation and pursue higher education,” the pedagogue officer added.
