Criminals in net
Six extortionists were arrested in Baguiati in an overnight raid on Saturday. The accused were members of the gang headed by “hathkata” Dilip. Police said they were trying to extort businessmen who had donated funds to several pujas.
Collapse
A part of a balcony of a two-storeyed building collapsed in Chandi Bose Lane at Maniktala on Saturday night. No one was injured. Police said the building had been declared unsafe by the civic body. Civic workers along with police demolished the rest of the balcony to avert a mishap.
Factory fire
A fire broke out in a paint factory on Benaras Road in Howrah around 4pm on Sunday. Six fire tenders doused the blaze in two hours. No one was injured.
Trio held
Rajesh Jalan, the owner of a courier company, and his associates Umesh Dhanuka and Kishori Agarwal were arrested on Saturday night for cheating a man off Rs 1.78 lakh. The trio was on the run for the past two years, said police.
Award
Six Calcuttans were felicitated for their bravery and honesty by chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Sunday. Asif Ahmed Nomani and Tulu Das were rewarded for catching armed dacoits who had robbed Rs 1.5 lakh from an APC Road flat. Sanjay Dului, another recipient of the bravery award, chased a snatcher and helped police arrest him. Taxi driver Swapan Barui was given a certificate for returning a bag containing money and jewellery left behind by a passenger. Policemen were also conferred awards at the programme at Sisir Mancha.
Held for fraud
Soumen Dey, a resident of Khardah, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly taking Rs 18,000 from a youth after promising him a job in a government hospital.
Bomb scare
A car parked on Prince Anwar Shah Road for over six hours on Sunday sparked a bomb scare. Nothing suspicious was found in the car. It was towed to Lake police station.
