Ambassador dies in blast

Islamabad, Sept. 21: The Czech ambassador to Pakistan, Ivo Zdarek, was killed in yesterday’s attack on Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.

Among the 53 dead were four foreigners — two Americans, the Czech envoy and a Vietnamese national.

The two Americans were part of the US armed forces, the defence department said in Washington.

Zdarek, 47, had moved from Vietnam to Pakistan a month ago and was staying at the hotel. Media reports said Zdarek had called his embassy soon after the bombing and asked to be rescued. However, he could not be located during a search. His body was found in the wreckage of the hotel.

All security personnel manning the heavily fortified gate of Marriott Hotel were killed.
