Antibiotics have been modern medicine’s magic bullets. For some years, these wonder drugs have been facing a strong resistance from their arch enemy — the bacterium. Antibiotic-resistant bugs now face an old missile from grandmother’s arsenal — honey. Unusually potent honey from manuka trees of New Zealand is being used to ward off marauding drugs. Scientists still haven’t identified the active ingredient that makes a drop of honey so potent but they aren’t averse to using it against drug- resistant bugs. Wily bacterium here we come!
