Guwahati, Sept. 16: The Indian Boxing Association today named the 13-member national squad for the 4th Asian Women’s Boxing Championship to be held at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in Sarusajai Sports Complex here from September 23 to 29.
The squad was named after a trial at the Sports Authority of India complex here today. J.L. Pradhan, Mehtab Singh and Jaipal Singh were the selectors.
Assam international boxers Kalpana Choudhury and Pranamika Bora have been named among the 13 to represent the nation. Choudhury will be participating in the 48-kg category while Bora will be contesting in the 60-kg one. Though both are strong medal prospects for the nation, Choudhury is likely to face stiff challenge from Chinese world champion Chen Jing.
Former world champion M.C. Mary Kom, S. Ibemcha Devi and L. Sarita Devi of Manipur are the others from the Northeast in the squad. Mary Kom, too, is expected to face a strong Chinese opponent in Guan in the 46-kg category. Ibemcha and Sarita will be participating in the 63-kg and 52-kg categories.
The other members in the squad include Chhoto Laura (50kg), Pabitra (54kg), N. Usha (57kg), Kavita Goyet (66kg), Jyotsna (70kg), Renu Gora (75kg), Lekha K.C. (80kg) and Kavita Thahal (86kg).
About 95 boxers from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Vietnam, Macau, Chinese Taipei, China, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Kazakistan, Mongolia, Korea and India, have already confirmed participation in the meet.
