Scuffle in jail
Inmates of Presidency jail clashed with prison guards on Tuesday afternoon while trying to resist the transfer of a prisoner to Dum Dum Central jail. Guddu, the prisoner, slashed his hand and stomach to prevent his transfer and was admitted to the jail hospital. In another incident, an inmate who was suffering from depression attempted suicide by slashing his wrist during a hearing of his case in a Howrah court on Tuesday. Mohammad Tariq, a drug dealer, was arrested in December 2006. He has been admitted to Howrah District Hospital.
Road death
A 32-year-old youth, Asish Basu, died after being dashed by a lorry on Tuesday morning at the Dum Dum Road-BT Road crossing in Chitpur area. He was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The lorry was impounded but the driver fled.
I-T man held
The CBI arrested Avijit Mitra, a senior income tax inspector, from his Beniapukur office on Tuesday. Mitra was caught taking a bribe of Rs 5,000 for offering to help a taxpayer get a refund of Rs 55,000.
Offloaded
A Bangladeshi national was offloaded from Air India’s flight to London at Calcutta airport on Tuesday and sent back to Dhaka because airport authorities noticed “some discrepancies” in his passport. Belal Ahmed, 30, had arrived in the city from Dhaka on an Air India Express flight.
