Bangla man killed

Balurghat, Sept. 12: A Bangladeshi dacoit was killed when the BSF opened fire at a five-member armed gang at Malancha in Tapan late last night.

The BSF had chased the gang after they sneaked into India. When the gang members fired at the border guards, they retaliated, killing the dacoit on the spot. The other four managed to flee.


Fake ID cards

Alipurduar: A person was arrested from Guabari in Jaigaon on Friday on charges of forging voter ID cards using those of dead people. The man, Giasuddin, has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days, said Alipurduar additional police superintendent S.R. Mishra.

Kalimpong: The Lions Club of Kalimpong Greater will organise a career guidance programme for school students at the Rockvale Academy here on Saturday.


Run over

Alipurduar: A 58-year-old was run over by the Guwahati-bound Sampark Kranti Express at Samuktala Road station on Friday. Bidur Das of Khadapara in Majidkhana was crossing the tracks with jute stalks when the train hit him. The train was detained at the station for two hours.


Heroin haul

Siliguri: Mahesh Sharma, a youth from Kalyangram near Darjeeling town, was arrested from Dagapur on Friday for possessing 20g of heroin, worth around Rs 2 lakh, police said.


Extra coach

Siliguri: The Northeast Frontier Railways will attach extra coaches in long distance trains from the last week of this month till November. The trains are 2517 Up/2518 Dn Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express, the 5708 Up/5707 Dn Katihar-Amritsar Express and the 2502 Up/2501 Dn Guwahati-New Delhi Pootvattar Sampark Kranti Express.


Hindi Diwas

Siliguri: Hindi Diwas will be observed at the north Bengal regional office of the United Bank of India here on Saturday. Different competitions will be organised to mark the occasion, officials said.
