Woman held for poisoning son

Sangeeta Das of Muchipara was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly poisoning her five-and-a-half-year-old son, Tanmoy, in 2004. Police said Tanmoy died at Medical College and Hospital on January 30, 2004. Suspecting foul play, the doctor sent the body for post-mortem, which revealed poisoning. Sangeeta went missing after Tanmoy’s death. ater in the year, the police traced the boy’s father, Kartick Das, who said he had been separated from Sangeeta and that their son used to live with her. Early in 2005, Kartick lodged a complaint with Bankshal court accusing Sangeeta of murdering Tanmoy. The sleuths found that the poison was cypermethrin and that Sangeeta had possibly given it to the boy. A chargesheet was filed early this year. On Tuesday, cops found her in her house and arrested her.

Gastro death in Phoolbagan

Lakshmi Chakraborty, a 28-year-old resident of Phoolbagan, died of gastroenteritis on Monday. Civic officials 45 people in the area have been affected with gastroenteritis since Sunday. But residents said more than 100 people had fallen ill. The outbreak was caused by a contamination in the water supply line.

Girl critical

The 18-year-old girl who consumed pesticide near the venue of a reality show on Monday, is “still critical and hardly responding to treatment”, Woodlands Hospital said on Tuesday. Police said the girl, Tanua Saha, has been having an affair with a 26-year-old hotel employee for the past one-and-a-half months.

Cracker mishap

A 40-year-old man died on Tuesday of burns he suffered in a blast in a cracker factory in Maheshtala, on the southern fringes of the city. Police said Nazir Hussain, who worked in the factory, was admitted to hospital on Monday night with 90 per cent burns. The factory been sealed. The owner is absconding.

Billboard scuffle

A scuffle broke out between CMC manager (advertisement) Debasish Sen and an executive engineer of Mackintosh Burn on Tuesday when civic officials and the Green Police went to remove display boards from trees in the high court area. Sen said a construction was on in the backyard of the high court and the developers had pinned boards on trees nearby. Both officials lodged complaints with Hare Street police station.

Rally hits traffic

Traffic movement in central Calcutta was hit by an All India Democratic Students’ Organisation procession from College Square to Raj Bhavan at 1.30pm. Police said traffic on Nirmal Chandra Street, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, SN Banerjee Road and parts of Jawaharlal Nehru Road came to a standstill between 2pm and 4pm.
