Drivers held
Autorickshaw drivers Timir Naiya and Bappa Kar were arrested on Sunday for allegedly dumping Ashok Das’s body in a Salt Lake housing estate last month. They had guided auto driver Amit Gaayen, whose vehicle had hit Das, to the estate. Gaayen was arrested earlier.
Suicide
Kiran Pandey, 25, hanged herself in her Watgunge police housing estate residence on Sunday morning. She was taken to SSKM Hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Kiran was married to Radheshyam. Their fathers are police constables. Kiran’s family lodged a complaint with police alleging that her mother-in-law Rajeshwari Devi used to torture her mentally.
Man injured
Pedestrian Manish Gupta was injured and about half a dozen shops were damaged after being hit by a tanker that boarded a footpath while taking a turn at the crossing of BT Road and RM Road, in the Tallah police station area, on Saturday night. Gupta was taken to RG Kar Hospital in a critical condition. The driver fled.
Road mishap
Renu Pandey, a 35-year-old pedestrian, was left with a leg fracture after she was dashed by a private bus at the intersection of Mott Lane and SN Banerjee Road on Saturday. The resident of Mott Lane, near Janbazar, was taken to NRS Hospital. Subal Nag, the bus driver, was arrested.
Collision
Mohammad Salim was injured after the private bus he was travelling on was hit by a minibus on Mayo Road on Saturday night. Salim’s right hand was outside the window when the mishap occurred. He was taken to CMRI Hospital. Bikash Barua, the minibus driver, was arrested.
Power supply
Power supply was affected in Ichhapur in Howrah for more than three hours after a truck carrying iron rods hit a transformer near Drainage Canal Road around 10.10am on Sunday. Police said the truck was being driven by the cleaner, who lost control and hit the transformer. The truck also damaged a roadside shop.
Ladies’ coach
Metro Railway will revert to the system of having reserved seats for women in all compartments from Monday. The experiment of reserving two compartments at the two ends of each train for women was scrapped after complaints from both male and female passengers.
Corrigendum
The man described as a techie in the caption for the picture along with the report “Techies protest insult to colleagues”, September 4, is not an IT professional. The error is regretted.
