Togadia yatra

New Delhi, Sept. 4 (PTI): The Orissa government today assured the Supreme Court that it will not allow VHP leader Praveen Togadia’s proposed yatra carrying the ashes of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati in the state.

Saraswati’s murder last month triggered violence that has killed at least 16 people in Kandhamal district.

Sonia flight

Bangalore: A technical snag forced a private aircraft carrying Sonia Gandhi and P. Chidambaram to land at the Bangalore international airport on Thursday. The Congress president and the finance minister were on their way to Coimbatore. Sonia was scheduled to address a public meeting at Erode in Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

Simi arrests

Ahmedabad: Four Simi activists were arrested on Thursday in connection with the July 26 serial blasts in the city. One, Abbas Saneza, is a resident of Kutch while the rest — Naved Quadri, Alias Sayed and Javed Ahmed — are from Ahmedabad

Aarushi bail

Ghaziabad (PTI): Vijay Mandal, an accused in the murders of Aarushi Talwar and Hemraj, was granted bail on Thursday by a Ghaziabad court. He worked as a domestic help at the home of one of Talwars’ neighbours in Noida and was arrested in July.

Death liability

Madurai (PTI): A fast-track court has directed Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Madurai’s collector to pay a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the wife of a person who was electrocuted when a high-tension wire snapped and fell on him, killing him on the spot. The incident occurred in September 2003 when Arumugam, 27, was repairing an electric motor.

Renaming bid

Vadodara (PTI): One hundred and fifteen primary schools of Vadodara Municipal Corporation will be named after poets, writers and freedom fighters on September 5, celebrated as Teacher’s Day. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is expected to take part in the programme.
